The Swannanoa Steering Committee is a group of 13 local residents who have volunteered their time to work on this planning process. At their October and November public meetings they used input from the community to develop a draft Vision statement for the public to review and give feedback on. A Vision Statement expresses the ideal aspirations of what the community wants for itself in the future, and will be part of the final Plan document. A Vision statement is not all-encompassing, and will not reflect every need and desire, but should be specific to the community, inspirational, and forward-thinking.

Question 1: Do you agree with the following draft Vision Statement?

Swannanoa is a resilient, engaged, and welcoming community that honors its history and working-class roots. It is a safe, connected community where people can live, work, and play in harmony with the surrounding mountains and river valley. We foster wellbeing with affordable homes to rent or own, accessible transportation options, and parks and gathering spaces. Local businesses, schools, arts, and agriculture anchor a thriving economy that provides jobs and meets the needs of our residents. Working together, we protect our natural resources for future generations, strengthen our infrastructure, and ensure opportunity and belonging for all who call Swannanoa home.

Question 2: Is there anything that needs to be added, removed, or revised from the draft Vision Statement above?

The Swannanoa Plan will focus on two geographic areas:

Resilience Area (Shown in green) will include a large amount of land starting from the eastern edge of the City of Asheville and going all the way to the western edge of the Town of Black Mountain. This area will focus on increasing resilience to be more prepared for future disasters, and on protecting the environment. (Resilience means the ability of a community or business to prevent, withstand, respond to, and recover from a disruption, such as a natural disaster.)

Highlight Area (Shown in orange) will include a smaller area closer to the US 70 Highway transportation corridor that is mostly served by public water and sewer. The focus will be on creating a vision for this area and addressing community needs. Some examples are housing, sidewalks, parks, businesses, disaster preparedness, and environmental protection.
